Add some pizazz to your displays. Here are some ideas on spicing up your displays!
First of all - do some research! Go to a few craft shows and notice how items are displayed. Are they colorful? Is there dimention? Would certain displays work well for jewelery more so than candles? What is the most unique factor you see in each display that sets one apart from another? The idea of a unique factor is what is going to set you apart from others as well as competitors.
Some simple items to make you stand out is the use of a nice table cloth, place mats, or table runners. I started out using cloth from a fabric store and trimming off the ends to make it look nice. It is inexpensive and can be as simple as a plain white cottom cloth or seasonal to fit the seasons, or elegant using black velvet. The same can go for place mats and table runners. For those who aren't into sewing inexpensive table cloths - I recommend cotton for their durability - at your local retail store.
Adding height really attracts customers. Using simple crates or wooden shelves work great and if you want them covered, a simple colth works great. You can make shelves and get materials at Home Improvement stores or search the internet for some online stores that specialize in shelving. Not only do shelves catch people's eye you may find that more room can be utilized. Also, make sure the low point is where the customer stands and gets taller towards the back of your display/table.
Color is Key. The colors black and white are dramatic but spicing things up with color will definately get people's attention. Pastels work great on baby type items and don't just use pink and baby blue - mint and light yellow are also warm and inviting. Your good 'ol red, white, and blues are great for country type displays as well as nature colors such as evergreens and eggshell colors. Bold colors like cherry red for hot sauce displays, primary colors for kids crafts, and hot pinks, aqua, and purple go great for tropical themes all doing wonders in promoting items. The possibilities are endless!
Lastly, use the senses. If you sell candles, burn them and ask customers where they last smelled that scent. If you sell food, try having free samples - I do and it is key for me in selling jams and other canned goods. If you sell photography use wall displays to hang them up as well as boxes labeled and categorized to get people involved in finding just the right photograph or painting for their wall. That brings us to touching the products - put the products in their hands especially if you want to show how certain items are antiqued with the grain of the wood, etc. Light, low volume music is also good but even better is actually talking to passersby. A simple "how are you today" can mean the difference from a person passing by in conversation to - "oh I was looking for something like that". Talking to people who come up to your table makes them feel welcome and they will find it easier to ask questions about your products.
I also want to mention that other simple decorations also help promote your products especially small items from other crafters that go well with displaying your items. I can't tell you how many times I get asked if my displayed fake, sugared strawberries are for sale, which I get from Peir 1, more than "how much for the strawberry jam". A little "treasure chest" of rhinestones and fake pearls are so cute for jewlery displays. Sometimes having a teddy bear in a homemade rocking chair at a furniture craft booth really tells the customer this is inviting rather than nothing in it at all. Just know you don't have to break the bank, look for deals at craft stores, dollar stores, business that are going out of business and of course other crafters. Other crafters not only will be greatful, they sometimes return the favor and buy something from you.
So, be sure you make your display inviting and unique as long as you have a little imagination, some good tips, and just a little extra cash.
